Rigging Block Setup
Installing a rated rigging block on a spar or limb so the rigging line runs clean and forces stay predictable.
When to use it
Any lowering operation where you want the line to redirect at the tree instead of running over bark.
Step by step
Step 1
Pick a placement above the piece, on sound wood with no cracks, cavities or included bark.
Step 2
Choke a rated sling around the stem, keeping the wrap tight and low-profile.
Follow the sling manufacturer's configuration and rated capacity.
Step 3
Attach the block to the sling with the rated connection point, nose down and free to align with the load.
Step 4
Reeve the rigging line through the block so the running side leads cleanly to the friction device.
Step 5
Check for line-on-line contact, bark pinch points and sharp edges through the whole path.
Step 6
Do a light test pull with the ground crew before the first real cut.
Cautions
- Peak forces at the block can be several times the piece weight — a shock-loaded drop multiplies fast.
- Never rig off a limb union with included bark or off dead wood.
- Keep the rigging system separate from the climbing system. Never share anchor points with your life support.
