Knots & Hitches
Timber Hitch
Rigging knots
Core
rigging
dragging
log
Quick binding hitch for dragging or lifting logs. Tightens as it pulls and unties instantly when slack.
When to use it
Dragging brush and logs, hauling a spar butt, tag line on a straight piece.
Step by step
Step 1
Pass the working end around the log.
Step 2
Wrap the tail around the standing part once.
Step 3
Take three or more twists of the tail around its own part, following the lay.
Step 4
Pull the standing part so the twists bind against the log; add a half hitch near the pulling end to steer it.
Cautions
- It relies on constant tension — it can fall apart when the load goes slack.
- Not for life support and not for overhead lifting where the load can swing free.
