Build the Running Bowline

Working end in orange

Step 1

Pass the working end around the limb and back across the standing part.

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Pass the working end around the limb and back across the standing part.

  2. Step 2

Form a small loop around the standing part.

  3. Step 3

Tie a bowline in that loop so the standing part runs freely through the eye.

  4. Step 4

Slide the knot up the limb to your chosen placement and dress it.

  5. Step 5

Add a half hitch or two toward the cut end for balance and control.

Half hitches keep the piece from rolling out of the knot.

Cautions

  • Place the knot on the load side of the cut, never across the hinge.
  • A running bowline can slide off a smooth, stubbed limb — add half hitches or a marl.
