Build the Figure-8 Loop & Follow-Through

Working end in orange

Step 1

Form a bight, cross it over the doubled standing part and leave enough rope for a full turn.

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Form a bight, cross it over the doubled standing part and leave enough rope for a full turn.

  2. Step 2

Take the bight completely around the standing part to form the figure-eight shape.

  3. Step 3

Pass the bight through the first loop. For a closed ring, retrace the original knot with the tail instead.

  4. Step 4

Dress every pair of strands parallel, remove crossings and set all four legs firmly.

Cautions

  • A crossed or poorly dressed figure eight is harder to inspect and can bind severely after loading.
  • Leave the tail length required by your employer and rope manufacturer; add the specified backup where policy requires it.

Training aid only. Follow ANSI Z133, your employer's policy and the manufacturer's instructions for every piece of equipment.
