Distel Hitch

Friction hitches
Intermediate
friction hitch
eye-to-eye
ascent

Grabby, self-tending friction hitch that stacks wraps above a locked crossing. Popular for footlocking and SRT ascents.

When to use it

Ascents and work positioning where you want strong hold with minimal tending.

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Clip one eye of the cord to your carabiner and lay the cord along the climbing line.

  2. Step 2

Wrap upward four times with the free leg, keeping wraps tight and touching.

  3. Step 3

Bring the free leg down the front, cross it over the standing part and tuck it under the wraps.

  4. Step 4

Clip the second eye into the same carabiner so both eyes carry the load.

  5. Step 5

Dress, set with body weight and function test before leaving the ground.

Cautions

  • Because it grabs hard, it can be difficult to release under high load — keep a foot loop or slack-line option.
  • Never leave the eyes on separate carabiners.
