Working end in orange

Step 1

Pass the working end around the spar.

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Pass the working end around the spar.

  2. Step 2

Cross over the standing part and take a second turn in the same direction.

  3. Step 3

Tuck the working end under the second turn so the two turns oppose each other.

  4. Step 4

Dress it snug and back it up with a half hitch or stopper on the tail.

Cautions

  • A clove hitch can roll loose under cyclic load — always back it up.
  • Never use it as a life-support termination on its own.
