A loop in the middle of a line that can be loaded three ways and unties after loading.

When to use it

Mid-line attachment points, isolating a damaged section of rope, redirect points.

Step by step

  1. Step 1

    Make two twists in a bight to form a figure-eight of rope.

  2. Step 2

    Fold the top loop down over the crossing point.

  3. Step 3

    Pass it up under the lower crossing and pull it through.

  4. Step 4

    Dress the knot symmetrically and set it hard.

Cautions

  • Check symmetry — a badly dressed butterfly loses strength.
  • Not a substitute for a rated eye on life-support rigging.
