Whoopie slings, loopies & shackles
Adjustable slings and shackles are the quiet link in a rigging system — splice burial, screw pins and bend radius all matter.
Safety features explained
Buried brummel/locked splice
Adjustable slings hold by splice burial under tension — minimum burial length is a hard requirement, not a suggestion.
Steel-core slings for hot work
Where chain or friction heat can cut synthetic fiber, a steel-core sling keeps the connection intact.
Rated shackle with captive pin
A stamped WLL, correct pin, and a pin that cannot back out under vibration.
Daily inspection checklist
- 1Check the splice burial length against the manufacturer's minimum before every use.
- 2Inspect the whole sling for cuts, fuzz, glazing, chemical staining and pulled strands.
- 3Check eyes, thimbles and any hardware for wear and sharp edges.
- 4Shackles: check the bow for bending or stretch, the pin for thread damage, and the WLL stamp.
- 5Confirm nothing in the system has been shock loaded or cut by a chainsaw.
Out of service now
- Splice burial shorter than the minimum, or a splice that has crept.
- Cut, melted or badly abraded sling.
- Bent, stretched or unstamped shackle; mismatched or damaged pin.
- Screw pin backing out under load or vibration.
Operating best practices
- Choke the sling snug against bark, not over included bark or a decayed union.
- Keep the bend radius wide — sharp edges and tight bends cut synthetic slings fast.
- Retire on any cut; a sling is the cheapest part of the rigging system.
- Keep a shackle out of side-load configurations and keep the pin captive.
Standards & compliance
- ANSI Z133: slings and hardware are inspected before use and loaded within WLL.
- Manufacturer minimum burial, bend radius and WLL guidance for every adjustable sling.
Summarised for field use. The current ANSI Z133 standard, OSHA rules and the manufacturer's manual are the controlling documents.
