Mechanical hitches, prusiks & devices
Hitch cords and mechanical devices are consumables — heat, glaze and compatibility drive both inspection and retirement.
Safety features explained
Heat-resistant hitch cord
Technora/aramid covers resist glazing from descent heat; a slick or hardened cord no longer grips.
Device compatibility window
Every device lists an approved rope diameter and construction — outside it, grip and braking are unpredictable.
Toothed cam and safety catch
Ascenders and rope-grabs hold in one direction and release only with a deliberate action on the catch.
Daily inspection checklist
- 1Feel the hitch cord for glazed, fused or flattened sections and check both eyes and stitching.
- 2Confirm the cord diameter and length still match the climbing line and the manufacturer's chart.
- 3On devices, check the cam teeth, springs, pivot pins, side plates and any wear indicator.
- 4Function-test grip on the actual line before leaving the ground, then load-test at knee height.
- 5Look for grit, sap and sawdust packed into moving parts; clean and re-test.
Out of service now
- Glazed, melted or fuzzy-soft hitch cord, or one past its service life.
- Hitch that slips or grabs unpredictably during the ground function test.
- Worn or clogged cam teeth, bent frame, missing spring or pin.
- Rope diameter outside the device's rated range.
Operating best practices
- Always weight-test the system at ground level before committing.
- Add a second point of attachment before any transition or cut near the system.
- Control descent speed to limit heat; feathering long fast descents is what glazes cords.
- Replace hitch cords on a schedule, not just on failure.
Standards & compliance
- ANSI Z133: climbing systems are function-tested before use and used per manufacturer instructions.
- Manufacturer instructions define approved rope pairings — no substitutions.
Summarised for field use. The current ANSI Z133 standard, OSHA rules and the manufacturer's manual are the controlling documents.
