Helmets, eye & hearing protection

PPE

PPE is rated for the hazard: electrical class, impact and lateral protection, eye and hearing ratings all have to match the job.

Safety features explained

Class E electrical rating

ANSI Z89.1 Class E helmets are dielectrically tested to 20,000 V — required where electrical contact is possible.

Lateral impact & retention (EN 12492)

Climbing-style helmets add side, front and rear impact protection plus a chin strap that keeps the helmet on in a fall.

Rated eye and hearing protection

Z87.1 lenses resist impact; mesh visors stop chips but not dust, and hearing protection is selected by NRR for the saw or chipper.

Daily inspection checklist

  1. 1Check the shell for cracks, dents, chalking, deep gouges and UV fading.
  2. 2Inspect the suspension, harness webbing, ratchet and chin strap for wear and clean function.
  3. 3Confirm the date of manufacture and replace per the manufacturer's schedule.
  4. 4Check lenses and mesh for scratches, cracks, missing screws and bent frames.
  5. 5Inspect muffs for cracked cups, hardened seals and flattened headband tension; replace foam plugs daily.

Out of service now

  • Helmet that took an impact, or shows any crack or chalky shell.
  • Missing or broken chin strap where a chin strap is required.
  • Painted or solvent-exposed shell (hides damage and can degrade it).
  • Scratched-opaque lenses, or muffs with hardened, leaking seals.

Operating best practices

  • Wear the chin strap in the tree, in the bucket, and any time a fall or a struck-by is possible.
  • Match electrical class to the job — Class E for any work near energized conductors.
  • Double up on hearing protection around chippers and stump grinders in tight urban reflections.
  • Retire PPE by date and by damage, and keep replacements on the truck.

Standards & compliance

  • ANSI Z133: head, eye, hearing and leg protection are required for the tasks that generate the hazard.
  • ANSI Z89.1 Type I/II, Class E/G/C for helmets; EN 12492 for climbing-style helmets.
  • ANSI Z87.1 for eye and face protection; OSHA 1910.95 for hearing conservation.

Summarised for field use. The current ANSI Z133 standard, OSHA rules and the manufacturer's manual are the controlling documents.
