Connectors
Carabiners & connectors
Auto-locking, load-rated connectors only for life support — and cross-gate loading is what breaks them.
Safety features explained
Auto-locking (triple-action) gate
Requires two or three deliberate motions to open, so it cannot be rolled open by a branch or rope.
Captive-eye / bridge-specific shape
Keeps the connector aligned along its major axis instead of drifting into a cross-gate position.
Marked strength ratings
Major axis, minor axis and open-gate kN ratings are stamped on the spine — minor-axis and open-gate strength can be a third of major.
Daily inspection checklist
- 1Open and close the gate ten times: it snaps shut, locks fully, and the sleeve returns on its own.
- 2Check the nose and keeper for wear, bending or a hairline crack.
- 3Look for rope-wear grooves in the basket and spine; a sharp edge or measurable groove is a fail.
- 4Check for corrosion, grit in the hinge, and any deformation from a drop onto concrete or a rock.
- 5Confirm ratings and standards markings are still legible.
Out of service now
- Gate that does not lock by itself or does not seat on the nose.
- Any crack, bend, or sharp wear groove.
- Dropped from height onto a hard surface with unknown damage.
- Non-locking or unrated connector used for life support.
Operating best practices
- Load along the major axis; dress the system so the gate cannot press on a branch, bark or hardware.
- Keep steel where abrasion and heat live; keep aluminum for weight-sensitive climbing connections.
- Never connect aluminum against a sharp steel edge or use a connector as a pry tool.
Standards & compliance
- ANSI Z133: snaps and connectors used for climbing are self-closing and self-locking, and are load rated.
- ANSI Z359 / EN 362 markings for connector strength and gate strength.
Summarised for field use. The current ANSI Z133 standard, OSHA rules and the manufacturer's manual are the controlling documents.
