Aerial lifts & bucket trucks

Upper and lower controls, the emergency bleed-down, outrigger setup and dielectric condition are the daily tests that keep a boom trustworthy.

Safety features explained

Lower controls with override

Ground controls override the platform so a ground worker can bring down an incapacitated operator — tested daily.

Auxiliary / emergency bleed-down system

A manual valve or auxiliary power that lowers the boom with the engine dead; every crew member knows where it is and how to work it.

Outriggers, interlocks and pads

Stabilizers plus interlocks that limit boom function until they are deployed; pads and cribbing spread the load on soft ground.

Dielectric insulating boom sections

Insulated upper booms and liners are tested to a voltage rating — clean and dry, or the rating means nothing.

Platform anchor point & lanyard

A load-rated anchor inside the basket for a fall-restraint or fall-arrest lanyard, used from the moment the operator steps in.

Daily inspection checklist

  1. 1Vehicle pre-trip: tires, wheels and lug torque, brakes, lights, mirrors, horn, PTO, steering play, leaks under the truck.
  2. 2Fluids and hydraulics: reservoir level, hose chafing, weeping fittings, cylinder rod condition.
  3. 3Boom and turret: welds, pins, keepers, pedestal bolts, rotation bearing, wear pads, leveling system.
  4. 4Platform: floor, liner, gate/chain, anchor point, control bellows, boot and cover condition.
  5. 5Test upper controls through full function, then test lower controls and the override from the ground.
  6. 6Test the emergency bleed-down / auxiliary lowering system and note it on the daily log.
  7. 7Outriggers: full deploy and stow, cylinder holding, pads and cribbing on the truck and undamaged.
  8. 8Insulated sections and liners clean, dry, uncracked, and within the annual dielectric test date.
  9. 9Decals, load chart, capacity plate and the operator's manual present in the cab.

Out of service now

  • Lower controls or override that do not function.
  • Emergency bleed-down that will not lower the boom.
  • Hydraulic leak at a cylinder, hose or fitting; boom that drifts down under load.
  • Cracked weld, bent boom, missing pin keeper, loose pedestal bolt.
  • Cracked, dirty or overdue-for-testing insulated section where electrical hazards exist.
  • Missing or damaged platform anchor point, gate or liner.

Operating best practices

  • Set up on firm level ground, chocked, outriggers on pads or cribbing, and clear of traffic with cones and signage.
  • Walk the site for overhead conductors, service drops, CATV and sag/sway before raising the boom.
  • Clip the lanyard to the basket anchor before the boom moves; stand on the platform floor, never on the rail or a bucket step.
  • Never climb out of the basket into the tree unless the operation, training and employer program allow it.
  • Keep the boom out of MAD, treat every conductor as energized, and use non-conductive tools aloft.
  • One person operates the boom; ground crew stays clear of the swing radius and drop zone.
  • Bring the boom home, stow outriggers, and re-check the travel position before moving the truck.

Standards & compliance

  • ANSI Z133 and ANSI A92 (A92.2 vehicle-mounted elevating and rotating aerial devices) for inspection, testing and operation.
  • OSHA 1910.67 and 1926.453 for vehicle-mounted elevating work platforms — body belt/harness and lanyard in the basket.
  • OSHA 1910.269 / 1910.333 and MAD tables for any work near energized conductors; only qualified line-clearance arborists inside MAD.
  • Annual dielectric testing for insulated aerial devices per the manufacturer and ANSI A92.2.

Summarised for field use. The current ANSI Z133 standard, OSHA rules and the manufacturer's manual are the controlling documents.
